Nairobi experienced its heaviest rainfall on record from mid-April to early May 2024, displacing thousands of families, destroying homes, and causing significant loss of life and property damage. The heavy rainfall overwhelmed most of the city’s drainage systems, causing widespread flooding in both rural and urban areas, particularly in Nairobi’s slums.
As the water rose, so did the urgency to address not only immediate rescue operations but also the provision of essential sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease outbreaks.
Mobile Loos Provided to Affected Communities: In response to these challenges, Karibu Loo Limited stepped up to support the Kenyan government, along with reputable relief organisations in Kenya such as Medicines Sans Frontiers Kenya and the International Committee of the Red Cross by supplying mobile toilets for hire. This gave affected communities access to essential sanitation facilities during these times of crisis. Additionally, several companies had their permanent washroom facilities flooded, requiring mobile toilets for use by staff while at work.
Installation and Maintenance: The Karibu Loo operations team promptly delivered cabins to the affected locations, ensured a dry setup and provided attendants for cleanliness and assistance to users who were not familiar with portable cabins. The team established a maintenance schedule to ensure the cabins remained clean and functional throughout the service period. This involved regular waste removal and replenishment of essential washroom supplies, such as deodorizers, to reduce odour during usage.
As we continue to face challenges caused by climate change and extreme weather conditions, it is important to note that the provision of essential sanitation services is a top priority. Our experience during the recent floods has enhanced our commitment to providing top-notch sanitation services in times of emergency. We are pleased to have supplied relief organisations with our mobile toilets and look forward to continuing our support for relief efforts within Nairobi and its surrounding environment.
